I think I knew what she meant, but she was equating an implied intolerance of someone elses sexuality with an implied intolerance of a particular haircolor. I just found that odd. She meant, i could be mistaken obviously, that it is as natural to object to homosexuality on a personal level as it is to have a preference for or against redheads.

Absolutely and totally agree Joe-Joe 305925. And as a good Christian, I am careful to also never depart from these Leviticus (and other) passages...unless you're suggesting that some of Leviticus is okay, and other parts should be ignored. And, if so, who gets to decide? Based on what?

1. Leviticus 25:44 states that I may possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?

In regard to the Biblical passages, namely Leviticus, according to some faiths in the Christian religion, the Old Testament was considered "Living Under The Law", and once Jesus Christ did his whole self-sacrifice/rise from the dead routine, Chrisitans are now "Living Under The Grace", which translates to he died for the sinful nature, making Old Testament "Law" irrelevant and unnecessary to follow. Answer me this: it's the same question Kristo brought up. Why would someone choose to be gay? Does it offer any benefits? No. Do you get more rights? No. You get less. You get ostracized more, frowned upon more, beaten up, murdered, and disenfranchised. So... why would someone then CHOOSE to be gay? Well, if it's not for the benefits, then it's gotta be for love. And, as most people probably know, love is not something you choose. It just happens. Therefore, because love is not a choice, and there are no other variables, the syllogism is fulfilled. Being gay must therefore not be a choice, but a typical disposition. There's no other logic to it.

Our church technology guy is gay and Republican and Christian. His mama says that is how she brought him up so he can't be any other way. She is in her 80s. There is a group called the Log Cabin Republicans. They are an embarrassment to the party's right wing and their numbers are growing. Some Republicans are moderates. Some Democrats are conservative. A conservative Democrat is about like a Republican moderate.

The ad was making a play on all-too-common and ever jr. high school expression of "that's so gay" to mean something is lame. They wanted to show that something being "so gay" isn't a bad thing. They just picked a really stupid location for it.

I would think it has to do with the fact that this younger generation isn't afraid of being "labeled". The problem is that most of the biblical verses you sighted are from the Old Testament, which is based directly on a collected set of folk lore by Hebrew authors. The story of Sodom was regarding rape and disrespect of human dignity, not homosexuality. Careful. Careful. Also, your passage from Cortinthians has a key problem: the term homosexual wasn't created until quite recently, which means that that must have been a license that the translator took. I think the only true guide we can take on religosity comes from the Four Gospels, none of which support bigotry. Didn't Jesus himself help the cast-asides and down-trodden? Also, to your point about "be fruitful and multiply"--with our Earth already suffering from overcrowding and world hunger, is that really a motto to live by anymore? I think love should dictate relationships, not an outdated, mechanistic view.

I get tired of "prooftexting" the fundamentalists, but when you take the Bible out of context, I feel it is necessary. It is part of our skewed society where the more openminded Christians don't read, understand, or accept the Bible as the Word of God, but the fundies do. The trouble is fundies don't take God's word in the historical and social context it was written in. "Abomination", in the Bible means "not kosher". God did away with kosher foods when Peter had his vision of the unclean animals before he went to Cornelius's house to tell the Gentiles about Jesus. In Leviticus the "man lying with man" issue was part of a dietary code---a portion of the Bible that today, in our context, is followed by Orthodox Jews, devout Muslims, and a weird holiness group with a foot long name in Atlanta that wears white and worships on Saturday (maybe a few other groups as well).

But you proof texted so I will proof text. Sometimes God says not to, as when the protestors appeared in front of my church last Sunday---two of them. We gave them bottled water and invited them to worship with us and stay for potluck. They called me a "fornicator". They judged me as gay because my church is mostly gay. But I stayed pure until my wedding day---at the age of 38. These folks think everything is bad. They were at Mardi Gras also. So we just loved them. (Our church went to Mardi Gras. We had a member whose house was on the route. We had fun and not a bit of fornication or drinking either.)

I have had gay friends and they do have more to spend on themselves because they are very selfish and usually very unusually vain! Hooking up with other men insures that they won't have any children to have to share life (and money with) so they can spend everything they get on themselves.

Would you please prove they are better educated and make more money. I am doubtful because the gay guys I know claim they can't make as much money because they are out of the closet gays and have a more difficult time getting hired. Also, a lot are in the arts and communications (where I have met those I know) and those aren't high paying unless you are a superstar.

By the way, as an employer I would have to hire gays if they apply and no one else does, but I would not believe my customers would still come by. Most people (and I'm in liberal Seattle) do not wish to be around gays because, as one friend put it, they act so fruity.

Charleston is very nice, Marie. The thing is... I think we're confusing being gay with being flamboyant. Quite different. I don't think not having children is being selfish. Many gay couples adopt. In addition, many straight couples bring children into the world without the necessary funds to support them, or do so due to peer pressure. While I won't say that gay people are more educated simply because I do not have the study on me, I will say, according to an Issue of Time Magazine from April, that the more educated one is (in terms of college and post-graduate education), the more tolerant they are likely to be of gay marriage and gay rights. That's just my two cents. Again, I don't know about the more money thing, because that is true--many guys are in creative industries. Good question.

When quoting the Bible it is nice to get the verse{s} correct. Check your Bible on 1 Corinthians. To make it easier, there is no place in the Bible that the word 'homosexual' is used. My wife and I bought a house next to a gay couple (together for 20 plus years) and we are still waiting for our hetero marriage to fail. They also adopted a seven year old boy who had been sexually abused by his hetero father (perish the thought that 90% of molestation is done by heteros) and abandoned by his hetero mother. He could barely speak, had major anger issues and yet 10 years later he is a well adjusted 17 year old with a beautiful girlfriend. It just pains me to think I live in the same country with some of these wacko nut job right wing 'Christians' who are the most narrow minded people on the planet who are so driven by fear and their own repressed sexuality.
